critique number 2

Pierre, brooke, and geoff all had pretty much the same feedback for me- that i needed to kick my butt into gear and get stuff done. while tomorrow is our clean up day (shamefully writing this at the last minute has finally been admitted....), i plan on taking everything home and working on it in my free time to make it as perfect as possible and as sturdy as i can. i will probably also use some of the materials i have at home that are left over from some of my fathers random projects because they are all sturdy materials that may aid me in my process.

cai guo quiang's exhibit caught my eye more than any of the others simply because of the awesomeness of the idea. the way that everything is so intense and you dont really know what to think of it no matter how many times you look at it is really something neat. While i dont intend (although i wish i could) to make an exhibit nearly as interestingly out of the ordinary, i do intend for mine to be a little bit different that then traditional make a painting, hang it up, and put a title and description under it in fine print. i want mine to look like a person (me) and with the audio, it's going to tell a story through the headphones that "i" was previously "listening" to (the replica will have 3 splitters, two coming out of the one so that i can have four headsets going at once) the people at my post. i dont know if i want to try to elaborate and make it crazy like cai's at the very last moment, but at the end, it'll be what it it'll be and i'm going to be happy with that.

Not so critical critique

During the not so critical critique i got feedback on my giant model of myself.
the most prominent thing that they had to offer was to redo the bone structure because it didn't really fit my face (i might have been flattering myself a little too much), so that is the most important part. Not because its what i WANT to spend the most time on, but because its the the part that requires the most precision. the actual body bone structure wont be seen too much because I am going to be dressing it up at i would normally dress. But my face is going to be the most artistic part of the whole piece.

three things that can get you into "trouble" in art.
1)the idea of perfection. the thought process that one can only move onto the next step after everything in the first step has been completed redone and perfected.
this tends to be a problem that many of the kids here at beaver have in their art projects. I notice that you (R. Roberts) are always trying to get the kids to understand that you can never fully be "done", so perfection isn't really attainable, so they need to focus on getting the bigger picture.
2)another problem that was addressed in the reading is about "scratching". Lots of kids at this school are terrible at scratching for ideas. they sit around and look blankly at walls (not just the seniors) and wait for the teacher to come and prompt them into an idea for their next piece.
3) wrong materials, while not entirely the students fault, could be avoided here if the students take time before the creation process to figure out what they are going to need and/or use. they once again rely on the teacher, or the occasional dropping by of P. Brooks to help guide them in the right direction.
